Do you absolutely need a steamer or extractor when you're going to service customers? I would say, it is definitely not necessary for you to have one when starting.
Does it make it easier and faster if you did? YES, but only when you know where and when to use it during the detail. Just because you have it doesn't mean you'll need to pull it out and use it each and every single time on each car.
That's why I always recommend to start off with no fancy tools and just use a brush, APC, and a towel. This will help you see where you can really improve your time if you had those tools.
