You know most of your watchmakers staking tool sets came with Stumps. Mine is a C&E Marshall and it came with 30 stumps. I'm going to go over some of these stumps and tell you what they're used for. One of the purposes of the stump is to protect your die plate. The second one is to help support the part that you're working on. It's a LOT safer to be pounding on the top of a stump with a punch than pounding on your die plate and taking a chance of damaging your die plate. This stump here is the largest one you're going to find in your staking tool set. It's called a flat faced stump. These stumps are used for supporting watch plates and bridges while pivot holes are being closed with a round face solid punch. You can see how it would help protect the die plate by pounding on this stump instead of pounding on the die plate.

This stump is for driving on roller tables. It has a side groove for the roller jewel and it has a center hole for the balance staff.

This is a flat face hole stump. It's used for resting wheels on for driving out staffs and pinions.

This stump here is used for tightening loose cannon pinions. This stump is called a "v slot". It's used for driving out the pinions on the escape wheels.

These stumps here are for the removal of a roller table. You have a large size, a medium size,

and then you have a really small size for small roller tables.
