Here are Five Important concepts of negotiation - Bargaining, Anchoring, Benchmarking, BATNA and ZOPA 👇
👉 Bargaining - A type of negotiation in which the buyer and seller of a good or service dispute the price and the exact nature of the transaction with the goal of coming to an agreement. Bargaining is also called Distributive Negotiation. It is often characterized by the back-and-forth communication designed to reach an agreement. This is the classic back-and-forth where you haggle over price and terms. It's like a dance, but with numbers!
👉 Anchoring - A well-known cognitive bias in negotiation, anchoring is the tendency to give too much weight to the first number put on the table and then inadequately adjust from that starting point – This clip shows how anchoring effect is just ignored and eliminated. Don't let the first number thrown out sea anchor your negotiation. Keep your wits about you and adjust as needed.
👉 Benchmarking – It is the practice of comparing business processes and performance metrics to industry bests and best practices from other companies. Dimensions typically measured are quality, time, and cost.
If there are other benefits and you are comparing added benefits in a deal, it always helps to convert them to cost/ money terms (as much as possible) because the world understands money better 🙂 Compare, compare, compare! Knowing where you stand in the industry can be a game-changer. And remember, everything can be converted to money terms – it's the universal language of business
👉 BATNA - Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement. It is the most advantageous alternative that a negotiating party can take if negotiations fail and an agreement cannot be made.
Therefore, BATNA not only acts as a safety net for failed negotiation attempts and it also leverage power and confidence for the procurement professionals🙂 Your safety net and secret weapon. Knowing your best alternative gives you the confidence to walk away if needed.
👉 ZOPA - Zone of Possible Agreement – It is considered an area where the negotiating parties may find common ground. ZOPA can generally exist where there is an overlap between each party's expectations regarding an agreement.
Therefore, ZOPA is the classical WIN-WIN area which meets the expectation of all parties involved in the negotiation – ZOPA also indicates the Walk Away Point which the negotiator should be aware as well🙂 It's like finding the golden ticket in the negotiation chocolate factory.
It’s about understanding the emotions and mindset of the other party to build trust and find common ground. This aligns well with BATNA and ZOPA, by truly listening, you can identify their needs, adjust your approach, and create a win-win situation.
