**How to Improve Your Delivery Fleet Utilization – The #1 Factor**
What’s the single most effective thing you can do to improve the efficiency and utilization of your distribution fleet? This was a key discussion point at our recent Supply Chain Leaders Academy, where we ran a practical exercise to break down the dynamics of vehicle scheduling.
In the exercise, participants manually mapped out delivery routes, considering factors like travel distances, unloading times, and both fixed and variable costs. It was a great way to understand how many different elements influence fleet efficiency before putting everything through a routing system to see the optimization in action.
But what’s the biggest factor that determines how well you can utilize your fleet? **Delivery time windows.**
Tight, inflexible delivery windows—such as a 30-minute slot between 9:00 and 9:30 AM—can significantly restrict fleet utilization. When customers impose narrow time constraints, it creates inefficiencies in routing and scheduling, leading to longer idle times, increased fuel costs, and reduced delivery capacity.
If you can **increase flexibility in delivery time windows**, even slightly, you’ll see **dramatic improvements** in fleet efficiency. Of course, route optimization and better planning also help, but nothing impacts utilization as much as delivery time constraints.
So, take a look at your delivery operations. **Are your time windows too rigid?** A little more flexibility could lead to big gains in efficiency and cost savings.
