Publishing an Android app to the Google Play Store requires a few essential steps. First, you need a working Android application and a Google Play Console developer account. To create the account, search for Google Play Console login, sign in using your Google account, accept the developer agreement, and pay the one-time registration fee of around 25 USD (approximately 2200 INR). The payment must be done using a credit or debit card.
After payment, complete your developer profile by filling in your developer name and contact details. Tax and payment information is only required if you plan to publish paid apps or offer in-app purchases. If your app is free or monetized via ads, tax details are not mandatory. Once the profile is complete, verify your identity using a government-issued ID such as a PAN card or driving license. Verification usually takes around one day.
To publish an app, you must upload an AAB file (Android App Bundle). APK files are no longer accepted for new apps since 2021. AAB files help reduce app size and improve performance because Google Play optimizes the installation based on device configuration.
In this walkthrough, the app was built using React Native with the help of Expo and EAS Build (Expo Application Services). Expo provides a cloud-based build service that supports Android and iOS builds and does not require local Android Studio setup.
After creating an Expo account, install the EAS CLI globally using npm and log in via your terminal. For development testing, run the development build command, which generates a link or QR code to install and test the app. For Play Store submission, run the production build command, which generates the final AAB file. Once the build is complete, download the AAB file from the Expo dashboard.
At this stage, you have everything required to publish the app: your Play Console account, identity verification completed, and your production-ready AAB file downloaded. These steps prepare you for uploading your app to the Google Play Console and completing the publishing process.
