Rejection of any coercive authority, self-organization.
This video discusses Platformism and Especifismo, two anarchist currents that address the question: How can one organize revolutionarily without reproducing party, state, or authoritarian leadership? I talk about, • why many anarchists have criticized the lack of organization • what the "Organizational Platform" of Makhno, Arshinov, and Ida Mett actually was • why Errico Malatesta warned that organization can quickly become authoritarian • what Especifismo and the FAU in Uruguay do differently • what "social insertion" means • why informal hierarchies are often less visible than formal ones • and why Marxist-feminist perspectives are important in organizational debates. So it's not about "organization yes or no," but about the question: What forms of organization empower people without creating new domination? Anarchism is a political tradition that aims for a social organization without imposed domination or hierarchy, based on real freedom and equality, self-management, and voluntary cooperation. It critiques authority that is imposed without consent, while not excluding organization or rules: it seeks forms of democratic, decentralized, and accountable power, inheriting from horizontal federalism and direct democracy. Errico Malatesta was an Italian anarchist, considered one of the main theorists of modern anarchism. Throughout his life as an activist, he worked to spread anarchist thought in various parts of the world. Today we will discuss one of his texts: "Anarchism and Anarchy," where Errico introduces us, broadly speaking, to how he believes a true anarchist should think. Between July 20 and 24, 2015, in partnership with the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (EACH-USP), the Institute of Anarchist Theory and History (ITHA) held the Theory and History of Anarchism course. It was five days -- each with over 3 hours of classes taught by research professors affiliated with ITHA -- aimed at providing participants with a relatively in-depth understanding of anarchism and its history. The topics of the classes were as follows: 1.) Anarchism redefined: theoretical-methodological approaches, concepts, and principles; 2.) Responding to Marxist criticism: general aspects and major episodes of anarchism; 3.) Historical contextualization of the period of emergence of anarchism; 4.) The emergence process of anarchism, its major debates, and its currents; 5.) Anarchism and revolutionary syndicalism in Brazil: historiographical aspects and fundamental debates. Thanks to the valuable assistance of comrades, we managed to record the entire course in video and audio. We are now making all the material available, allowing interested parties to take the course online.
