John Calvin: Literary and Intellectual Journey Calvin was not originally a theologian, but a legal humanist whose methodology moved away from medieval scholasticism to embrace grammatical-historical exegesis. His literary corpus is immense, filling more than fifty volumes in the Corpus Reformatorum. • Intellectual Debut: His first publication was a commentary on Seneca's essay De Clementia (1532), demonstrating his mastery of the classics and his interest in political ethics. • Magnum Opus: Institutio Christianae Religionis (Institutes of the Christian Religion). Initially published in Basel in 1536 with only 6 chapters, it evolved through multiple revisions to its final edition in 1559, which consisted of 80 chapters divided into four books. This work systematically articulated Reformed faith in a logical and coherent manner. • Biblical Commentaries: Calvin is considered the "exegete of the Reformation." He commented on almost the entire Bible (except Revelation and the minor epistles of John), always seeking a "lucid brevity" to uncover the mind of the sacred author. • Other Writings: These include the Ecclesiastical Ordinances (1541), polemical treatises like Psychopannychia (against the sleep of the soul), shorthand sermons, and over four thousand letters of spiritual guidance. Evolution of His Thought and Philosophy Although Calvin rejected the title of "philosopher," his thought has deep roots in Platonism and Augustinianism. • Absolute Sovereignty of God: This is the center of his theology. He maintained that God has total control over creation and human affairs, both in common grace and redemptive grace. • Knowledge of God and Man (Cognitio Dei): He asserted that there is an interdependence between knowing God and knowing oneself; no one can see themselves clearly without first looking at the face of God. • Predestination: He developed the idea that God predetermines the eternal destiny of each human being (election and reprobation), viewing it as a comforting doctrine where salvation depends entirely on a loving God and not on human merit. • Authority of Scripture (Sola Scriptura): For Calvin, the Bible is the final authority, superior to ecclesiastical tradition or human reason, and its truth is confirmed by the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit. • Work Ethic and Society: He transformed the view of secular work into a divine "vocation" (beruf), promoting diligence, self-management, and personal responsibility as ways to glorify God. History Throughout His Life and Circumstances Calvin's life was marked by exile and political struggle: • Conversion and Exile (1533–1536): After a "sudden conversion" and the reformist discourse of his friend Nicolas Cop in Paris, he fled France due to persecution against Protestants (The Affair of the Placards). • First Stay in Geneva (1536–1538): He was retained by Guillaume Farel to lead the Reformation. However, his rigor clashed with the municipal council and he was expelled. • Strasbourg (1538–1541): Invited by Martin Bucer, he served as minister to French refugees. It was a time of peace and intellectual maturity where he perfected his doctrine and got married. • Consolidation in Geneva (1541–1564): He returned at the city's request. He established a strong ecclesiastical structure (Consistory) and founded the Academy of Geneva (1559), a key training center for the global spread of Calvinism. • Controversy of Michael Servetus (1553): A critical point was the trial and execution of the Spanish physician for heresy (denial of the Trinity). Although Calvin was not the civil ruler, his theological influence was decisive, a fact that continues to generate debates about religious tolerance in his time. Conclusion and Application to the Present Calvin's influence transcends the religious sphere, being a pillar of modern Western civilization. • Foundation of Modern Democracy: His Presbyterian ecclesiastical government system (distribution of power between pastors and lay elders) influenced theories of social contract and separation of powers. • Economic Development: According to Max Weber's thesis, the Calvinist work ethic and frugality laid the psychological foundations of modern capitalism. • Universal Education: His insistence that every believer should read the Bible propelled mass literacy and the creation of public and free educational systems. • Current Relevance: Calvinist thought on social responsibility and the sovereignty of foundational texts remains relevant in debates about individual freedom and duty ethics. His legacy persists in Reformed and Presbyterian churches globally. Remember: A video does not replace a book.
In this video, I clearly and comprehensively organize one of the most intense debates in Christian theology: Calvinism, Arminianism, and Molinism. If you've ever felt lost among concepts like predestination, free will, irresistible grace, apostasy, supralapsarianism, infralapsarianism, or synergism, this video is for you. Here, we review the history of the doctrines of salvation, from Pelagius and Augustine to Calvin, Arminius, Wesley, and Molina. I also explain the different types of Calvinism, the differences between classical and Wesleyan Arminianism, and why Molinism attempts to harmonize divine sovereignty and human freedom. 📌 In this video, you will find: History of the soteriological debate Pelagianism, semi-Pelagianism, and Augustinianism Supralapsarian, infralapsarian, and sublapsarian Calvinism Reformed and Wesleyan Arminianism Molinism explained simply Predestination, grace, and human freedom My personal conclusion 📥 Download the slides and access the full content here: https://academiapensamientocristiano.com/courses/doctrina-de-la-salvacion-un-estudio-profundo-de-la-soteriologia-cristiana/ 🎓 You can also join my academy and try 7 days for free: https://www.skool.com/academia-pensamiento-cristiano-3678 My social media: https://linktr.ee/jonathanmurcia Soteriology series playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJ2T1YrL7cgpNvP6TpzIkTR_EjAXlstYN&si=XDvJ9g8cuXg7r9cZ #Calvinism #Arminianism #Molinism #Predestination #FreeWill #Soteriology #ChristianTheology #ChristianThought #Apologetics #DoctrineOfSalvation #Wesley #Calvin #Arminius #BiblicalTheology
Saint Augustine, the Master of the West: A Synthesis of Christian and Patristic Philosophy Discover the life and work of Saint Augustine, the thinker who reached the pinnacle of patristic philosophy and, with his synthesis, paved the way for the Middle Ages. Based on the History of Christian Philosophy by Philotheus Boehner and Etienne Gilson, this video is essential for students and enthusiasts of Philosophy and Theology. Augustine, who integrated the Hellenic spirit and Roman will, was a pioneer of Christian thought. What you will learn in this video: • Truth and Skepticism: How Augustine refuted the skepticism of the Academics, defending the existence of truth. His famous argument of the evidence of one's own existence ("Si fallor, sum") ensures that, even in doubt, there is truth. • Proofs of God: The analysis of his demonstrations of the existence of God, based on the superiority of human reason and eternal, unchangeable truths. • Metaphysical Doctrines: The view of God as creator and the explanation of evil as deprivation, rather than as substance. • Rationes Seminales and Creation: The concept of seminal reasons as invisible forms that God implanted in creatures, allowing for the evolution of species over time. • The Moral Order (Ordo Amoris): The fundamental principle that morality is based on the order of love. The will, endowed with free will, must be directed towards the highest good. • De Civitate Dei (The City of God): The historical and universal duality between the State of God and the Earthly State (State of the Devil), a perspective that offered a universal view of History. Subscribe for more videos on the History of Christian Philosophy, from its Origins to Nicholas of Cusa. The video explores "Augustine's thought," one of the pillars of "medieval philosophy," and his relentless quest for truth. Dive into the "intellectual life" of this great thinker and understand "who Augustine was," his doubts, and the "history" of discoveries. An essential journey to comprehend "mystical Christianity" and the formation of Western thought.
This text comprises excerpts from "The City of God" by Augustine, a work that addresses the relationship between the earthly city and the heavenly city. The source explores theological and philosophical issues, discussing the nature of God, angels, the creation of the world and man, and the origin of sin. It also critiques pagan beliefs and practices, comparing Roman gods with the true Christian God and refuting various opinions of philosophers and ancient myths. Additionally, it details the history of humanity, from Adam and the Flood to the final judgment, and discusses concepts such as happiness, virtue, peace, and divine predestination. Finally, the text includes numerous examples of miracles and supernatural events to reinforce Christian faith and the omnipotence of God.

🎓 From SAINT AUGUSTINE to POLITICAL AUGUSTINISM - A History of Instrumentalization What if the thoughts of a Church Father were twisted to justify power? In the 5th century, Augustine of Hippo wrote The City of God, a deeply spiritual work on the relationships between the heavenly and earthly realms. Yet, centuries later, his ideas would be reinterpreted to legitimize the authority of both kings and popes... How has Augustinian thought been instrumentalized to serve political ambitions? 👨🏫 Join Professor Thérence Carvalho, a Doctor of Law and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Nantes, as we dive into the lesser-known history of political Augustinism, from theological origins to ideological manipulations. Political Thought Philosophy Saint Augustine - Saint Augustine, drawing on Cicero, contrasts two types of government through the antithesis regere – dominari: one governed by discipline and benevolence, the other driven by pride and the taste for luxury. It is in this context that he proposes the famous etymology, reges a regendo. Learn more about Saint Augustine's thought in this video. Do we have a final orientation, a last refuge? The answer of religion is that we live from a meaningful foundation that supports us but also demands from us, in which we find stability and orientation, and for which the name 'God' stands. Since the beginning of critical thinking in ancient Greece, there has been a desire to decide this answer through discourse. FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD AND ULTIMATE TRUTH Philosophical reflection on religious faith has always aimed to give the word 'God' a meaning acceptable to reason. From this effort, lines of thought emerged that were later called 'proofs of God'. The so-called 'Cosmological Proof of God' aims to show that in our concept of a comprehensive being, a self-sufficiency emerges, without which our world cannot be conceived. It makes clear that without it, the concept of God would lose its rational content. A similar analysis can be shown in our understanding of truth. The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) Professor Freedman begins the lecture by considering the ways historians read the Confessions. In this work, St. Augustine gives unique insight into the life of an intellectual mind in Late Antiquity, into the impact of Christianity on the Roman Empire, and into the problems of early Christianity. The three major doctrinal concerns of the early Church were the problem of evil, the soul-body distinction, and issues of sin and redemption. In the Confessions, St. Augustine searches for explanations of these problems first in Manichaeism, then (Neo)Platonism, and finally Christianity.Underlying this narrative are Augustine's ideas of opposition to perfectionism, his exaltation of grace, and the notion of sin as indelible, not solvable. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
