I'm Enric, your philosophy teacher on YouTube, and this is Addicts to Philosophy. This time, we review one of the great classics in the history of philosophy: Aristotle's great work of practical philosophy, his Nicomachean Ethics. If we had to describe what ethics is for Aristotle, we would say it is the science of the good life. Aristotle realizes that, in our actions, not everything can be desired as a means to an end, but there must be some ultimate end or supreme good that we seek in everything we do and that we want not for another reason, but exclusively for itself. Everyone agrees, he says, that it is eudaimonia, happiness (which would be better translated as "good life" or "flourishing"). But what does happiness consist of for Aristotle? Ah, my friend, therein lies the question! For while everyone agrees that the ultimate end is called "happiness", in what it consists of, there each person thinks differently. For some, happiness lies in sensory pleasures; for others, in honors; for others beyond, in money... To clarify all this, Aristotle decides to investigate what the function or ergon of human beings is, that which characterizes and distinguishes them from other beings. His happiness, his good, will then consist in the perfection or excellence of that which is most proper to him: a good man will be one who has learned to fulfill his own function as a man well. And thus, our philosopher proposes, reason is: the good life of man will therefore be an excellent life in accordance with reason. This leads him to a whole discussion about virtue (areté, excellence), the different types of virtue (ethical virtues and dianoetic virtues), how virtue is acquired and what it consists of, the intermediate stages between virtue and vice, and the nature of perfect happiness for human beings. For all this and much more is what I tell you in this video, where you will discover all the secrets of Aristotelian ethics 😊 Let's think! (A video ideal as an introduction to philosophy, or for high school and university entrance exams) 🕘 INDEX: 0:00 - What is ethics for Aristotle? 1:34 - What is happiness for Aristotle? 3:42 - What is the function (ergon) of man? 4:25 - How many types of virtue exist for Aristotle? 6:28 - Ethical virtue and the mean in Aristotle 8:58 - Continence and incontinence, between virtue and vice 13:23 - Virtue as an extreme (!) 14:51 - What is dianoetic virtue for Aristotle? 16:15 - Contemplative life and active life 😱 And if you are reading THIS, it means you belong to the 0.5% of people who read the descriptions ALL THE WAY TO THE END! 👏 Leave me a comment with a lion emoji 🦁 to let me know; if I see many, you will make my day! 😄 🎬 Check out my most recent videos ► https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBgi-68fpmF6yIEDOqd4kPw/videos 📚 MAIN SOURCES: ► Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics ► Giovanni Reale, Introduction to Aristotle (Links in the pinned comment!) ❤️ PATREONS and MEMBERS (thank you so much!) We just learned a bit about Aristotle and his philosophy, but he was also the first figure to truly establish logic as a field unto itself, and he developed many of the formalities this field still uses today. The legacy and influence of Aristotle has been almost without comparison in the history of European philosophy, so much so that deviating from his thought during the Middle Ages would have been met with animosity and ridicule. His reign of “over a millennium of intellectual history came to an end only with the audacious irreverence of Occam and Ramus, the experimental science of Roger Bacon, and the innovating philosophy of Francis Bacon.” - Will Durant As with many of my videos I can never repay the debt I owe to Will and Ariel Durant, many of their works have been invaluable in collecting information for the composition of these videos as well as inspiring my own love of philosophy. Maximize your potential through constant learning I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope these 7 Life Lessons From Aristotle will add value to your life. Aristotle is a Promethean figure in the history of the world, who lived between 384–322 BC, He is considered "the father” of logic, biology, political science, zoology, embryology, of natural law, scientific method, rhetoric, psychology, realism and even of meteorology. He was first a student of Plato, then, when Plato retired, he left the Academia which Plato founded, and he became the tutor of Alexander The Great, and the two other future kings: Ptolemy and Cassander. He established a library in the Lyceum which helped him to produce many of his hundreds of books on papyrus scrolls. Unfortunately, only a third of his magnificent work has survived. For example, the treatises “Physics”, “Metaphysics”, “Nicomachean Ethics”, “Politics”, “On the Soul” and “Poetics”, have influenced more than two millennia of scientists and theologians alike, both fascinated by his ideas. Welcome to "Rhetoric" by Aristotle: the ultimate guide to learning how to persuade and convince with mastery and elegance. To do this, it is essential to know that a good speech consists of three constitutive elements: (a) the speaker, (b) the listener, and (c) the topic. Based on this tripartite division, it seems logical to conclude that the technical means of persuasion correspond to each of these three parts: (a) the character of the speaker (i.e., ethos), (b) the emotional state of the listener (i.e., pathos), and (c) the structure of the argument itself (i.e., logos). Within Hellenistic culture, dialectic encompasses the theoretical principles necessary for dialoguing with the aim of discovering the truth through the exposition and confrontation of opposing arguments and reasoning. In other words, it is the set of deductive bodies and logical rules that one would employ when reasoning to reach reliable, truthful, and objective conclusions. In contrast, rhetoric is the art of speaking with the effectiveness necessary to delight, convince, or move the audience; that is, an orderly communicative process aimed at persuasion. Although both disciplines act symbiotically and require joint participation, they should not be confused: while dialectic essentially seeks the truth, rhetoric is focused on persuasion. For example, demonstrating that the Pythagorean theorem (a2 + b2 = c2) holds for any triangle or that depression may be due to hereditary factors is one thing; it is quite another to expect you to accept it as valid and incorporate it as your own belief. If I only had to prove the veracity of these statements, it would suffice to input the values into the equation or show a study about the neurobiology of stress that describes the close relationship between cortisol (the hormone associated with stress) and the mental disorder in question. However, what would happen if the person I am explaining this to does not understand my arguments? Okay, both statements would still be true (regardless of whether the listener understood me or not), but I would not have succeeded in changing their opinion at all; dialectically, it would be a success; rhetorically, a resounding failure. Pay attention to the following quote from Aristotle in L.I: "It is clear that if the public audience were impeccably educated and in an appropriate mental state, then there would be little need to resort to rhetoric; but what a grave mistake a litigant would be making if they thought that the crowd always acts from sanity, good faith, and reason. Even if that same speaker had the most accurate knowledge of the topic, instructing such a group using only the intellectual route would be practically impossible: they are distracted by factors that do not belong to the topic at all, they are unable to follow exact evidence based on real facts, they are receptive to flattery and resistant to criticism, they try to confirm their pre-established beliefs, and to top it off, they are accustomed to the misuse of this beautiful art."

Aristotle begins this task with the claim that every voluntary human activity “seems to aim at some good.” He proceeds to arrange the goods in a hierarchy that points to the highest good — happiness. Course Overview: In the Nicomachean Ethics—the first book written on the subject of how best to live—Aristotle argues that human happiness chiefly depends upon a person’s character, which is formed by making good choices. This course examines Aristotle’s teachings about human nature, the meaning of the good, and the virtues necessary for happiness. Students will not only learn what Aristotle says about the good life, but will also explore ways to put this knowledge to work.
New videos: Thursday and Sunday, 2 PM. Happiness is the highest good for humans – but what constitutes a happy life? And how does one become a good person? In the ten books of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle distinguishes virtues from emotions and blameworthy character traits, examines the significance of values such as friendship, and essentially provides a guide for a good, virtuous, and happy life. As a major work of Western ethics, the Nicomachean Ethics is a central text in philosophy studies. The video refers to themes from Book 1 and 2 of Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics." Welcome to my introduction to philosophy and its history - this time focusing on Aristotle - virtue ethics, logic, and substances. The influence of this thinker on science, our culture, and our thinking cannot be overstated, which is why I can only scratch the surface in this video. Nevertheless, I hope it inspires some people to dive a little deeper into the topic. If you enjoy my content, consider supporting my channel on Steady: https://steadyhq.com/de/litosophie ...or making a one-time donation via Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=N5XTA5NMTJ9MJ My videos are intended as an introduction to philosophy for people who have had little contact with the subject so far, or for refreshing knowledge and entertainment. So please understand that if you are, for example, a philosophy student, the discussion may seem relatively simple. The motto is essentially: "Philosophy made simple". Over time, I aim to cover the entire spectrum of philosophical thought through various thinkers and movements: Practical philosophy, political philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and everything else. I run this introduction to philosophy and the channel in my spare time, so there may be breaks of one or two months between videos. This week we explore the final ethical theory in this unit: Aristotle’s virtue theory. Hank explains the Golden Mean, and how it exists as the midpoint between vices of excess and deficiency. We’ll also discuss moral exemplars, and introduce the concept of “eudaimonia.” -- Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios Crash Course Philosophy is sponsored by Squarespace. http://www.squarespace.com/crashcourse -- Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet?
